PLANT CARE

Below are some quick tips for growing and caring for some of your new plant friends! If you need more info or have further questions, please feel free to email me or visit the About section to send me a message.

AIR PLANTS / TILLANDSIA

Light: Air plants are typically placed close to a window so they can get bright filtered light. Avoid exposing them to direct sunlight as this might be too hot for them. You can also leave them close to a bright white or daylight type fluorescent lights. They ideally need a day and night cycle, so be mindful of where you place them.

Water: About once or twice a week depending on how dry the surroundings are, give them a good soak in a bowl full of bottled water for about an hour. Don't use tap water because of the chemicals found in it. If you can get rain water or clean water from a natural source like a pond or a stream, that would be awesome and beneficial to the air plants.

Once you're done, shake the water off gently and place on a paper towel and let dry for several hours. You can also give them a good misting instead of soaking, but be sure to let the water run off and dry them on a paper towel if necessary.

For air plants inside small containers, give them a spritz of water once or twice a week. Leave the container uncovered overnight to allow the plant to dry out before covering it. The most important thing to remember while caring for air plants is to let them dry thoroughly after watering, because they are vulnerable to rot.

SUCCULENTS & CACTI
Light: Bright light is highly preferred, but medium light will suffice. Direct sunlight is ok, but try and position the plants where they only receive a few hours direct sunlight. Even sun loving succulents can get burned.
Water: Basic rule of thumb is to water the soil thoroughly and wait for the soil to completely dry out before the next watering. Water only when soil is dry. Watch your terrarium for a few weeks to get a good understanding of how much water the plants take in and the timing of when the soil dries out. Succulents are meant to withstand dry environments, so in most cases it's better to neglect watering them.

FERNS & OTHER TROPICAL PLANTS
Light: Bright light is preferred, but medium light will suffice.

Indirect or filtered sunlight is good, but don't expose them to direct sunlight to avoid frying them.

Water: Keep soil evenly moist, but not soggy. You will need to watch your terrarium for a few weeks to get a good understanding of how much water the plants take in and the timing of when the soil dries out.

BONSAI
Light: Bright light, filtered sunlight.

Place them as close to the window as possible.
Water: Keep soil evenly moist, but not soggy. Monitor how dry the soil gets by either dipping a toothpick in the soil or feeling how dry the soil is with your finger. Mist daily or every other day to avoid the leaves drying out.

TROPICAL KOKEDAMA
Light: Bright light is preferred, but medium light will suffice.
You can hang these close to a window or under bright white fluorescent lighting.
Water: A good soaking once or twice a week depending on the size of the moss ball. Dip the ball into a bucket or bowl of water and let it soak for a few minutes. Give it a gentle squeeze when finished to let the excess water out. Mist the moss ball daily to every other day to keep it nice and lush.
Tip: When the ball feels light, then it’s time for another soak.

SUCCULENT KOKEDAMA
Light: Bright light, indirect sunlight.
You can hang these close to a window or under bright white fluorescent lighting.
Water: A good soaking once or twice a month depending on the size of the moss ball. Dip the ball into a bucket or bowl of water and let it soak for a few minutes. Give it a gentle squeeze when finished to let any excess water out. Mist the moss ball daily to every other day to keep it nice and lush.
Tip: When the ball feels light, then it’s time for another soak.
